How can parents keep up with evolving technology so safety tools stay relevant and effective?

Parenting Perspective

In the fast-paced digital world, online safety is not a one-time setup but an ongoing commitment. Staying informed requires a proactive approach rather than waiting for problems to arise.

Commit to Continuous Learning

Set aside a small amount of time each month to stay current. This could involve reading trusted tech parenting blogs, watching short tutorials on new apps, or joining online safety webinars. Being part of a community of parents, whether online or local, is also a great way to share tips and learn about new trends and risks together.

Learn Alongside Your Child

Children are often the first to know about new platforms and games. Use their knowledge as an opportunity for connection and conversation. Inviting them to teach you about a new app not only helps you understand it but also creates a natural opening to discuss its safety features and potential risks in a collaborative, non-confrontational way.

Schedule Regular Safety Audits

Technology and its settings are constantly changing. Make it a habit to review your family’s digital safety net every few months. This includes checking the privacy settings on your child’s favourite apps, updating security software, and ensuring your parental controls are still aligned with your family’s safety goals

By staying proactive, parents model the invaluable skills of lifelong learning and adaptability, which will serve their children far beyond the digital world.

Spiritual Insight

Islam encourages believers to be vigilant, proactive, and strong in their efforts to protect themselves and their families.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hashar (59), Verse 18:

‘ All those of you who are believers, seek piety from Allah (Almighty); and let every person anticipate (the consequences of) what they have sent forth (in the Hereafter) for the next day; and seek piety from Allah (Almighty); as indeed, Allah (Almighty) is fully Cognisant with all your actions.’

This verse is a powerful call for foresight. “Looking to what one has put forth for tomorrow” is the essence of proactive parenting. In a digital context, it means staying vigilant and taking the necessary steps today to protect a child from the unforeseen challenges of tomorrow.

The pursuit of beneficial knowledge and strength is a hallmark of a believer.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 2664, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Strive for that which will benefit you, seek the help of Allah, and do not give up.‘

This hadith inspires parents to be strong in their role as protectors. This strength includes actively seeking the knowledge and resources needed to navigate the modern world. Striving to understand technology for the sake of a child’s safety is a beneficial effort that, when done with reliance on Allah, is a source of great reward.
