How do I stop my child from quitting instantly when a tech-based learning app feels “too slow”?

Parenting Perspective

When children are accustomed to the high speed of games and videos, a slower-paced educational app can feel frustrating or ‘boring’ in comparison. Your goal is to help them understand that a slower pace often leads to deeper, more meaningful learning.

Set Expectations Before Starting

Before they begin, let them know that the purpose of this particular app is to help them think carefully, not just to move quickly. By framing it as a ‘thinking challenge’ rather than a fast game, you help them to approach it with the right mindset from the start.

Break the Task into Mini Goals

Focus on and celebrate small, incremental achievements. This could be getting one answer correct after a few attempts or solving one particularly tricky part of a puzzle. Acknowledging these mini goals provides a sense of progress without needing the instant gratification of a fast level-up.

Model Patience Yourself

If you are with them while they use the app, be sure to model the behaviour you want to see. Sit with them for a few minutes, showing calm and patient engagement yourself. Your quiet example reinforces the value of staying with a thoughtful process.

By treating slower-paced learning as a valuable opportunity rather than a design flaw, you help your child to develop the resilience needed to work through less stimulating but ultimately more rewarding tasks.

Spiritual Insight

The process of learning and gradual growth is deeply valued in Islam. Lasting benefit is understood to come from steady, patient effort rather than from quick but superficial results.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verse 69:

And those people that endeavour (to please) Us (Allah Almighty); so, We (Allah Almighty) shall indeed, guide them (to those pathways) that lead to Us; and indeed, Allah (Almighty) is with those who are benevolent (in their actions).

This reminds us that making a sincere and persistent effort is what brings divine support and guidance in any worthwhile endeavour.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 783, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The deeds most beloved to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are small.’

This teaches us that consistent effort, even at a slower pace, holds more value and blessing than impressive bursts of quick but short-lived action.

By showing your child that sticking with a slower app is an act of patience and dedication, you are nurturing not only their learning skills but also their spiritual understanding of perseverance.
