What Duas can I read to stay calm during hard moments?

Parenting Perspective

Dua as a Tool for Calm

It is normal to feel overwhelmed as a parent, tiredness, stress, and constant demands can make even the calmest person feel they are at breaking point. In these moments, turning to Dua can be like taking a deep breath for your soul. Keeping a few short supplications ready in your heart can help you pause before reacting harshly. Even whispering these words can give you time to gather your thoughts and respond with kindness instead of frustration.

Creating a ‘Calm Plan’

Create a ‘calm plan’ for your toughest moments. Step away for a minute if you can do so safely. Take slow breaths, drink water, or make Wudhu if possible. These small actions can soften anger and clear your mind. Teach your child that it is okay to pause and ask Allah Almighty for help: ‘I need a moment to calm down so I can be my best for you.’ This models healthy emotional control for them too.

Keeping Duas Accessible

Write your favourite Duas on a sticky note or save them on your phone so they are easy to remember. Speak to them aloud when you feel your chest tighten. Little by little, you train your mind to connect moments of stress with turning back to Allah Almighty for relief and strength.

Spiritual Insight

Our beloved faith gives us beautiful Duas and reminders for when life feels too much.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. ‘

This Ayah is a gentle reassurance that every test, even the daily struggle for patience, is within your ability with Allah Almighty’s help.

One powerful Dua is from Prophet Musa (AS) when he felt overwhelmed by his task, found in Surah Al Taha (20), Verses 25–28:

My Lord, expand for me my chest, and ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech. ‘

This is perfect when you feel your words may come out harshly or you need calm before addressing your child.

Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also shared a beautiful supplication for distress: O Allah Almighty, there is no ease except that which You make easy, and You make the difficult easy if it be Your will.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5641, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim… but that Allah Almighty expiates some of his sins for that.

This Hadith Shareef reminds you that every sigh and tear is noticed, and that your patience wipes away sins and brings you closer to Allah Almighty.

When you feel your heart tightening, pause, place your hand over your chest, and repeat these Duas with trust. They are like gentle anchors in a storm, helping you hold onto Sabr and hope. May each whisper of Dua remind you that Allah Almighty sees your struggle and your calmness is an act of worship, no matter how small.
