How do I spot signs of sensory processing challenges in young children?

Parenting Perspective

Understanding Sensory Processing Challenges

Sensory processing challenges happen when a child’s brain has trouble making sense of information from their senses such as sounds, textures, lights, smells or movement. Many children have little quirks, but there are signs that may mean a sensory difficulty needs extra care and support.

Signs of Over-Sensitivity and Sensory-Seeking

For example, some children are overly sensitive. They may cover their ears at everyday noises, refuse to wear certain fabrics or become upset by bright lights. Other children might crave more sensory input. They may spin in circles, bump into people, chew on things that are not food or constantly seek strong hugs. You might also notice your child feeling overwhelmed in busy places or getting distressed when their routine changes without warning.

Observing Patterns and Keeping a Record

Watching these patterns over time can help you understand whether your child’s reactions are mild preferences or signs they are feeling overloaded. Keeping a calm record of what seems to trigger strong responses and what helps to settle your child can be really helpful. Sharing these notes with your GP, health visitor or a special educational needs specialist can give you extra support if the challenges start to affect everyday life.

Early understanding can help your child’s world feel safer and more predictable. Many parents find that small changes like softer clothing, noise-cancelling headphones or calm, quiet spaces make a big difference. Remember you are not alone in this. With gentle, consistent support, you can help your child feel secure and better able to handle a world that sometimes feels too loud or too bright.

Spiritual Insight

Islam reminds us that every child is unique, and what feels overwhelming for them is seen and known by Allah Almighty. When your child struggles with sensory overload, it can test your patience and theirs, but it can also draw your family closer to Allah Almighty through Sabr and gentle care.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Shams (91), Verses 7–8:

And by the soul and He who proportioned it. And inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness. ‘

This Ayah reminds us that each child is perfectly crafted by Allah Almighty, including their senses and how they experience the world.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make the path to Paradise easy for him.

Seeking knowledge about your child’s sensory needs is an act of faith, a way of honouring the trust Allah Almighty has placed in you. You do not need to ‘fix’ every difference; instead, you offer comfort, safe spaces, and calm routines that make life feel less frightening for your child. Make sincere Dua for wisdom and patience. Trust that Allah Almighty sees the effort behind every gentle word and every small adaptation. With time, understanding, and Tawakkul, what feels like a hardship now can become a bridge to deeper love, resilience, and Barakah in your family’s daily life.
