What can I do if my child cries or gets overwhelmed mid-lesson?

Parenting Perspective

Pause and Offer Comfort

It is very common for children, especially younger ones, to feel overwhelmed and burst into tears when learning feels too hard or tiring. When this happens, the best thing you can do is pause rather than push through. Take time to sit with your child and comfort them gently. A hug or a few kind words, such as ‘I see that this feels really stressful for you right now,’ can work wonders.

Validate Feelings and Take a Break

Never tell them not to cry, as this can make them feel ashamed about feelings that are completely normal. Let them rest for a few minutes or switch to something calming like colouring a picture or listening to a gentle story. Once they have settled, talk through what upset them. Were they frustrated by the lesson? Were they simply tired or hungry?

Be Willing to Adjust Your Plan

Be willing to adjust your plan when needed. No lesson is worth leaving your child feeling anxious or afraid of making mistakes. Small breaks, clear limits, and your steady support help build trust. Over time, your child will feel safe knowing that home is a place where learning is kind and patient, even when things feel difficult.

Spiritual Insight

Islam honours our emotions as part of being human, even holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ felt sadness and worry at times, yet he taught us how to handle them with Sabr and hope.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear… ‘

This Ayah is a reminder for parents and children alike that no challenge is too big when we turn to Allah Almighty sincerely.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1921, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

He who does not show mercy to our young ones… is not one of us.

Use this as your guide when your child cries, your mercy teaches them how to be gentle with themselves too. Once your child is calm, help them make a small Dua: O Allah, calm my heart and help me try again. Share stories of the holy Prophet ﷺ comforting others and how seeking Allah Almighty’s help makes even the hardest moments lighter. Over time, your child will learn that feeling overwhelmed is not weakness but a chance to practise patience and trust in Allah Almighty’s mercy. This mindset gives them strength and helps them see each lear
