How can I find out how my child learns best?

Parenting Perspective

Observing Your Child’s Natural Learning Signals

Every child is wired uniquely and understanding how they learn best is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Start by observing how your child interacts with the world. Do they light up when drawing or building? Do they ask endless questions during stories? Do they move around constantly while trying to grasp new ideas? These everyday behaviours are more than quirks; they are learning signals. Pay attention to the moments when your child seems most engaged or at ease and follow those clues.

Using Dialogue and Experimentation

Ask open, reflective questions like, ‘Did that help you understand better?’ or ‘What part was fun or tricky for you?’ This dialogue builds awareness and helps your child feel involved in their own learning journey. You can then experiment with various approaches: visual learners may benefit from mind maps and colour-coded notes; auditory learners might prefer discussing ideas or listening to recitations; kinesthetic learners often grasp concepts better through movement, building, or roleplay.

Communicating and Avoiding Comparisons

As you explore together, communicate clearly: ‘I noticed you remembered more when we talked it through, let us try that again next time.’ This validates their effort and shows that you are not simply instructing but learning alongside them. Most importantly, resist the urge to compare. Just because one child thrives with flashcards does not mean another will. When your child feels respected in how they learn, they build motivation and resilience.

Adapting your approach to suit your child’s learning style is not about academic advantage alone, it is about affirming their identity. It tells your child, ‘How you learn matters to me.’ That message fosters self-worth, curiosity, and a lasting love of learning.

Spiritual Insight

In the Divine blueprint of human development, learning is a process both sacred and personal.

Allah Almighty reminds us of this beautifully in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verse 78:

And Allah (Almighty) extracts you from the wombs of your mothers, (in a state) in which you know nothing; and has (designed and) designated for you the power of hearing and sight and intellect, so that you may become grateful. “

This verse highlights the different faculties, hearing, seeing, feeling, through which we are designed to learn and process the world. It affirms that each human being receives unique tools for understanding.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 407, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ adjusted his teaching methods depending on the companion in front of him. He used stories, analogies, gestures, repetition, and even silence to guide different learners. This Prophetic approach was not rigid it was intuitive, respectful, and profoundly effective.

When you take time to discover how your child learns, you are not only following educational best practice, but you are also mirroring a deeply Islamic principle. You honour the way Allah Almighty created your child, and you nurture their path with compassion and wisdom.

Learning styles are not obstacles, they are gifts. When embraced with care and tailored guidance, they lead your child towards knowledge that is not only retained but remembered with joy and purpose. And in that journey, your role becomes not just that of a teacher, but a guardian of their God-given potential.
