How can both parents support my child’s learning in a balanced way?

Parenting Perspective

The Importance of Communication and a United Front

When both parents share the responsibility of supporting their child’s learning, it creates a stable, emotionally nourishing environment. Children thrive when they feel surrounded by consistent love, calm routines, and a united front. Balance begins with communication. Discuss roles openly and decide together how each parent will contribute. One might handle school communications and help with homework, while the other supports emotional regulation or reinforces study habits through play and conversation. This collaborative effort shows the child that both parents are invested, and that learning is not a burden to be endured alone, but a journey held in love and partnership.

Consistency in Routines and Shared Praise

Consistency is key. Children feel secure when the expectations from both parents align. Agree on core routines like screen time, bedtime, or revision schedules and stick to them as a team. Celebrate effort together, no matter who was more involved that day. Simple shared praise like, ‘We are both proud of how you focused today,’ reinforces unity and boosts the child’s confidence.

The Importance of a Shared Approach

Avoid expressing disagreements about school matters in front of your child. Conflicting messages can create anxiety and confusion. Instead, work through differing views privately and come to a shared approach. This demonstrates emotional maturity and teaches the child that even differences can be navigated with respect and love. When parents model calm communication and joint support, they create a powerful template of collaboration that the child carries into their own relationships and learning experiences.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the family is a trust (amanah), and each member has a sacred role in fulfilling that trust with mercy, wisdom, and consistency. The noble Quran emphasises the importance of shared parental responsibility.

Allah Almighty says in Surah Al Tahreem (66), Verse 6:

O you who are Believers, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire (of Jahannam) whose fuel is people and stones… “

This verse places the spiritual and moral nurturing of children squarely on both parents, not one alone. It calls for active, conscious parenting grounded in love and guidance.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1705, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock.

This Hadith speaks directly to the balanced role of parents. A shepherd does not only feed or shelter their flock they watch, guide, protect, and remain present. When both mother and father take this responsibility to heart, they create a household of safety and Barakah

Support in learning is not merely academic it is emotional, spiritual, and relational. Even a simple act like sitting beside your child while they study, or making Dua together before a test, infuses learning with a sense of purpose and calm. Let your child see that both parents are partners in this journey not only in instruction, but in love, presence, and trust in Allah Almighty.

When this shared approach is built on compassion and clarity, the home becomes a space of growth, not only for the child, but for the entire family.
