What should I do if my child studies too much and feels tired or stressed?

Parenting Perspective

The Importance of Balance and Rest

Balance is essential when supporting a child who studies too much and begins to feel tired or overwhelmed. While motivation is a gift, overwork can lead to stress, low mood, and even resentment towards learning. Use a weekly planner that includes not only study hours but also time for meals, relaxation, sleep, and joyful, unstructured moments. You can say, ‘Part of being successful is knowing when to pause and rest.’ Encourage breaks without guilt. These might include a nature walk, some quiet drawing time, or even a nap. Help them step away from pressure by reminding them that rest is productive too.

Integrating Physical Activity and Well-being

Integrate physical activity into the day, such as stretching, outdoor play, or light sports. A healthy mind needs a rested body. Overstudying can diminish memory and creativity. Sit together to design a routine that respects both learning and well-being. Show your child that you value their health as much as their achievement. When your home values both excellence and kindness, children learn that success does not mean sacrificing peace.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Taaha (20), Verse 2:

We have not sent down to you the noble Quran to cause you distress (by the non-conformity of it by the people). “

This verse offers profound comfort, reminding us that our faith is not meant to be a burden. The pursuit of knowledge, even when noble, should not come at the cost of physical or emotional harm. Islam teaches us to seek balance in all aspects of life.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Make things easy and do not make them difficult.

This Hadith reflects a key Prophetic principle: mercy and ease are foundational to how we live, learn, and teach. If a child feels overworked or weary, gently guiding them back towards balance is not laziness, it is wisdom.

Help your child understand that even in the pursuit of good, excess can become counterproductive. Encourage them to trust that a calm, well-paced journey brings more Barakah than rushed striving. Let them see that Islam calls us not just to effort, but to self-care, gratitude, and thoughtful moderation. By protecting their well-being, you are teaching them to honour the body and soul Allah Almighty has entrusted to them.
