How can I help my child understand that trying their best is important in Islam?

Parental Perspective

Shifting Focus from Results to Process

One of the most powerful lessons you can teach your child is that giving their best effort always matters. Say to them, ‘Trying your best shows your heart. Even when something is difficult, effort means you are growing.’ Shift their attention from results to the process by asking, ‘Did you give it your all today?’ This helps them reflect and feel proud of their dedication, not just the outcome.

Building Resilience Through Honest Effort

Explain that real success comes from trying with honesty, not just winning or scoring high. Let them know that even when they do not reach the goal, the effort is never wasted. Say, ‘It is not about always getting it right. It is about showing up, staying patient, and doing your part.’ This message builds resilience and confidence.

Reinforcing the Message Through Daily Life

Use examples from everyday life to reinforce the message. Whether they tidy their room, practise a new skill, or study for a test, praise the effort with words like, ‘I saw how focused you were. That is what matters most.’ This helps them internalise the belief that consistent effort is valuable and meaningful.

Spiritual Perspective

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Najam (53), Verse 39:

And they shall be nothing (to account) for mankind except what he has undertaken. “

This Ayah teaches that results come from striving, and what matters most is the attempt itself. It reminds us that effort is rewarded in the eyes of Allah Almighty.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1970, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if small.

This Hadith encourages steady effort over perfection or grand achievements.

Tell your child that Islam honours those who keep trying, even when things feel hard. Every time they push forward with sincerity, they are practising Imaan. Let them understand that once they have done their best, they can trust the rest to Allah Almighty. This teaches them not only to work hard, but to find peace in knowing they have done their part. Trying becomes an act of faith, not just a way to achieve goals.
